UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR) start the new year with a new Massive Open On-line Course (MOOC): Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for Disaster and Climate Resilience.

This course was developed to increase understanding and awareness about how NbS are applied for increasing disaster and climate resilience. It provides pathways for implementing the Paris Agreement, the Sustainable Development Goals and other international framework agreements in countries and communities. Above all, it is a call for action, with examples on how each of us can contribute – in small or large ways – in reducing disaster and climate risks. The MOOC is open to everyone who would like to deepen their knowledge of the application of NbS and are targeted at specific groups, especially policymakers, practitioners, engineers, business owners and youth. It will be hosted on the SDG Academy platform and is offered in seven languages.

As we look toward a new year, we also aim towards a post-COVID-19 world and new opportunities for pursuing more sustainable development pathways. We know that the destruction of nature is partially responsible for the emergence of pathogens like COVID-19. The pandemic is just one symptom of the ill health of our planet, amplified by the climate crisis, but we face multiple opportunities to recover and build back better and greener. This is what our new MOOC will show.

We launch our new MOOC and invite panelists to discuss the opportunities and strategies for increasing disaster and climate resilience through Nature-based Solutions. We will hear about green recovery, Europe’s Green Deal as well as how different stakeholders are employing the power of Nature to boost resilience. The question we will all be asking our panelists is how can we all contribute to making 2021 the start of a truly new, green era?
