Protecting People From Disasters Through
Nature-based Solutions

As a global thematic platform of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), PEDRR seeks to promote and scale-up implementation of Nature-based Solutions for Disaster Risk Reduction, and ensure it is mainstreamed in development planning at global, national and local level, in line with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Nature-based solutions for disaster risk reduction

Nature-based Solutions is an umbrella term which includes several types of ecosystem-based approaches to deal with societal challenges such as disasters and climate risks. This includes ‘Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction’ (Eco-DRR), which is the sustainable management, conservation and restoration of ecosystems to reduce disaster risk, with the aim to achieve sustainable and resilient development. Well-managed ecosystems, such as wetlands, forests and coastal systems, act as natural infrastructure, reducing physical exposure to many hazards and increasing socio-economic resilience of people and communities by sustaining local livelihoods and providing essential natural resources such as food, water and building materials.
