Abstract
The ALFAwetlands Policy Brief underscores the critical role of wetland and peatland restoration in achieving the European Union\'s biodiversity and climate objectives. Aligned with the EU Nature Restoration Law (NRL), the brief highlights legally binding targets for restoring degraded ecosystems, emphasizing wetlands\' capacity to sequester carbon, regulate water, and support biodiversity. It presents data on the extent of peatland degradation and associated greenhouse gas emissions, advocating for rewetting and sustainable management practices. The brief also showcases initiatives from ALFAwetlands Living Labs across Europe, demonstrating collaborative approaches to wetland restoration and offering insights for policymakers and stakeholders.
