Peatlands: ‘black gold’ for climate mitigation
A new map developed by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) suggests much more peat exists in the tropics than was originally estimated. This article advocates for the protection of these newly discovered high-carbon ecosystems to absorb carbon and keep it out of the atmosphere. Check it out.
The Sydney Barrier Reef: Engineering a natural defence against future storms
As water temperatures rise off the South-East coast of Australia, risk of strong storms increases around the Sydney metropolitan area. Maps of cyclone tracks since 1997 reveal a slight shift to the south. The article explores the benefits of an artificial coral reef to limit the impacts of storms on the highly urbanized coast of Sydney. Learn more here.
