It also identifies the barriers that prevent funding of natural defenses, and proposes a framework that helps identify when and where there may be opportunities to finance natural infrastructure. Institutional deficiencies jeopardize mangrove conservation efforts
|
|
Unsustainable human activities and climate change are threatening coastal ecosystems in countries of West-Central Africa. This paper argues that mangrove ecosystem conservation and restoration efforts in the region did not have the anticipated co-benefits. Institutional deficiencies and a lack of coordination between stakeholders may undermine the positive effects of mangrove conservation in the region. Read the full article here.

Equator Prize 2017 Winners Revealed

|
Winners of the 2017 Equator Prize showcase the innovative work of local and indigenous communities towards sustainable development using nature-based solutions. Projects include reduction of flood and mudslides risks, improved water access and payments for ecosystem services using carbon credits. The Equator Initiative launched its report Making Waves: Community Solutions, Sustainable Oceans and a nature-based solutions database on June 8 2017. Wetlands as green infrastructure and alternative wastewater treatment plants
|
|
|
|
Traditional, concrete treatment plants are expensive to build and maintain. The village of St. Pierre-Jolys in Canada found a better solution. Staff from Native Plant Solutions (NPS) proposed the tertiary treatment wetland; a sustainable, cleaner, cost-effective and greener way to reduce nutrient levels in the village’s wastewater. The project presents the added benefits of increasing flood resilience. Learn more here.

Natural capital valuation and flood risks

As land development, deforestation and wetland degradation increase vulnerability to floods in Canada, appropriate valuation of natural buffers becomes critical when pricing flood risks. Insurers say preserving wetlands is about thirty times cheaper than building seawalls. Learn more here.

Assessing the future of climate change policy in the UK
|

To be held in London on 10 October 2017, this conference will examine the priorities for UK climate change adaptation and planning ahead, as preparations are put in place for publication of the National Adaptation Programme in 2018. Participants will evaluate future requirements for the management of climate-resilient infrastructure, risks of climate change to ecosystem services and to public health, and the opportunities to improve efficiency in adaptation measures.
