Wetlands International: Improved water resource management and resilience building in Uganda

A resilience building programme was carried out by Cordaid, Wetlands International  and others to reduce drought risks in the semi-arid region of Karamoja, Uganda, by implementing an integrated watershed management strategy in the Lokok and Lokere catchments, which protects and restores  natural environments. Land restoration against drought in Ethiopia

While Ethiopia is suffering from severe drought, there is water in Gergera. Twenty years of restoring its hills and river valley have brought life back to this area of the Tigray region in the country’s far north. Read more here.
Ecosystem solutions to wildfires
Last week’s deadly wildfires in Portugal raised the question of fire risk reduction. This article examines the social and environmental conditions which led to wildfires that left over 63 dead according to authorities. Sustainable forest ecosystem management with diversified flora and dense vegetation surrounding human settlements offer scope for disaster risk reduction. Read the article here.

Heatwaves in cities: Can expanded tree canopies offer a solution?

 


Before the hottest days of the summer arrive, NYC Mayor de Blasio is announcing the launch of Cool Neighborhoods NYC, a new $106 million program designed to curb the effect of extreme heat, and protect against the worst effects of rising temperatures from climate change. The programme, involving measures to expand the city’s tree canopy to limit heat island effects, aims to reduce the vulnerability of New Yorkers to heat waves. Read more here. Link to the report.
Manila hopes greening its shorelines will yield cleaner water and less flooding

Regional officers of the Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) turn to ecosystem-based flood and pollution solutions for Laguna de Bay, in the Manila metropolitan region. DENR has planted a grove of bamboos on the lakeshore to demonstrate the effectiveness of ecosystems in tackling pollution and flooding issues. The Philippine government, with its partners, is prepared to spend USD 161 million to replant hectares of bamboo and mangrove to mitigate pollution and improve the lake’s floodwater storage capacity. Call for Abstracts: 9th ESP World Conference on Ecosystem Services
 
The 9th World Conference of the Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP) will be held in Shenzhen, China 11-15 December 2017.  The overarching theme this year will be “Ecosystem Services for Eco-civilisation: restoring connections between people and landscapes through Nature Based Solutions”.

The call for abstracts is now open. Deadline is 19 August 2017. More information and abstract submissions here.
