Rebuilding with resilience - Lessons learned from projects after Hurricane Sandy
|

After Hurricane Sandy, the innovative competition known as Rebuild by Design (RBD) was launched to inspire affected communities to rebuild differently and enhance its resilience to future events. In the past two years, US$335 million was allocated to build a mixture of structural and nature-based defenses and recreational amenities in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City. The results of these initiatives are shown in the Georgetown Climate Center report, which aims to share lessons learned from the novel projects generated through this competition. "Living Shorelines" protect communities and infrastructure from extreme storm and flood events
|
|
Natural or “living” infrastructure, such as wetlands, sand dunes, and mangroves, can protect shorelines more cost effectively than engineered infrastructure, such as walls and bulkheads. In this article, the Army Corps of Engineers, USA, is considering nationwide permits which would allow faster approval of living shorelines. For more information click here.

Disaster-prone areas in the Philippines adopt 'eco-town' program

Disaster-prone areas in Rizal, Philippines, have established "eco-towns" under a project commissioned by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA). Natural solutions, such as bio-charcoal briquetting and ecological conservation, are implemented to help mitigate the effects of floods and landslide hazards. For more information follow the link.
