Nature as the first line of defence against floods
A report published by the Wealth Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services (WAVES) Partnership recommends using assessment techniques often applied in the engineering and insurance sectors to measure ecosystem benefits for flood protection. This new work assessing the flood reduction value is one of the very first, rigorous valuations of ecosystem regulating services. By showing that protection characteristics of coastal ecosystems can be incorporated into economic planning tools, it is hoped that policymakers will view ecosystem-based measures as a cost-effective alternative to grey infrastructure. Attitudes towards disaster prevention in Japanese coastal areas
This study analyses the public opinion of a proposed coastal seawall project in Japan. Through surveys of coastal residents, the study highlights two main points: the need to address public concerns about the negative ecosystem impacts of building the proposed seawall, and to consider ecosystem-based solutions for managing coastal hazards.
