PEDRR Shoutout:                Consultative workshop on scaling-up Eco-DRR investments in India
On 5 February, UNEP, together with the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, held a consultative workshop on ecosystem‐based approaches for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation in Nehru Marg, Nagpur, India. The workshop presented the latest developments in the field of Eco-DRR/CCA internationally and discussed how ongoing Eco-DRR/CCA efforts in India can be better coordinated and up‐scaled. Interview
How nature can help us adapt to a changing climate: Climate scientist David Hole responds
Q: Why don’t we hear more about nature-based solutions?
A: Ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) solutions are often complex and therefore hard to explain in today’s fast-paced media. EbA’s effectiveness in reducing risk is also not completely understood yet.

Q:Can EbA be applied in metropolitan areas?
A: EbA can be just as applicable in an urban setting as it is in rural. However, EbA should not be the only solution – a systems approach must be taken.

Q:Did EbA play a role in the climate negotiations in Paris?
A: Yes. The Paris agreement acknowledges that climate change is/will continue impacting communities, so climate change adaptation through EbA is essential.

Nature crucial to combating impact of climate change on water
Climate change is going to make water-related hazards, such as droughts and floods, more frequent and severe in specific regions. Two Managing Directors of The Nature Conservancy argue that nature-based investments can minimize these risks and ensure enough water for future generations.  Read the article.

Handbook on Law and Disaster Risk Reduction
The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and UNDP have developed a handbook to support mainstreaming of disaster risk reduction through policy and legal frameworks. Drawing from previous work on the “Checklist on Law and Disaster Risk Reduction”, the handbook provides detailed guidance on enhancing risk governance across sectors, including environment. Check out the handbook.

The Nature Conservancy: At the Water's Edge
This video describes how The Nature Conservancy is leading the charge on climate change resilience. It focuses on the development of an ecosystem-based adaptation project in Grenada, which employs low-profile underwater structures to reduce storm wave energy and promote coral growth as well as fish habitat – a project which the Conservancy hopes to scale up. Watch the video.
