How nature can help us adapt to a changing climate: Climate scientist David Hole responds

Q: Why don’t we hear more about nature-based solutions?
A: Ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) solutions are often complex and therefore hard to explain in today’s fast-paced media. EbA’s effectiveness in reducing risk is also not completely understood yet.
 
Q:Can EbA be applied in metropolitan areas?
A: EbA can be just as applicable in an urban setting as it is in rural. However, EbA should not be the only solution – a systems approach must be taken.
 
Q:Did EbA play a role in the climate negotiations in Paris?
A: Yes. The Paris agreement acknowledges that climate change is/will continue impacting communities, so climate change adaptation through EbA is essential.

It focuses on the development of an ecosystem-based adaptation project in Grenada, which employs low-profile underwater structures to reduce storm wave energy and promote coral growth as well as fish habitat – a project which the Conservancy hopes to scale up.
