PEDRR Shoutout : Is nature a viable solution for disaster risk reduction in Africa

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in collaboration with the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), hosted a workshop for participants from sub-Saharan Africa, on 20-21 November, in Port Louis, Mauritius. The workshop demonstrated the benefits of nature-based solutions for disaster reduction in Africa. Click here

Release of the Cancun Declaration at the CoP 13 Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)

The Cancun Declaration was adopted by the 13^th Conference of the Parties of the CBD, which met in Cancun, Mexico from 4-17 December. The declaration makes specific reference to the importance of ecosystems for the prevention of natural risks including desertification and for maintaining food security. Encouraging a transdisciplinary approach for effective climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction

In this article, the authors argue in favour of a transdisciplinary approach to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction. They recommend the integration of disciplines, approaches, and knowledge systems, which result in greater, more sustainable impacts in confronting multi-dimensional challenges.

IUCN present natural solutions in Guatemala

Between 05-07 October, Guatemala hosted the 2nd National Congress on Climate Change, drawing more than 700 representatives from government and non-government sectors. IUCN presented on “Communities with natural intelligence: The approach of ecosystem-based adaptation.” The presentation addressed the role of ecosystems as natural solutions to climate change and risks affecting communities.Click here for more.
