Online Flood Forecasting Tool to Save Lives in Mali
© Wetlands International
Due to high rainfall and already high groundwater levels, Mali's Inner Niger Delta is expected to experience its highest level of flooding in 50 years in the coming months of November - December. To help people adapt to the shifts of changing climate, Wetlands International, and the Malian government launched an online flood forecasting tool, known by its French acronym OPIDIN. It can be used for early warning and to predict water-level subsidence. Based on daily water level measurements and satellite-derived rainfall estimates for the Upper Niger, OPIDIN predicts the water level and timing of the flood peak and the maximum extent of the floods in the delta.
