PEDRR Shoutout : PEDRR partners at the Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, 3 to 6 July 2018 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

The 2018 Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction will take place from 3 to 6 July 2018 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Wetlands International will be organizing a side event on “Wetlands as natural infrastructure for reducing disaster risk” on July 5, 2018 from 9:00am to 10:00am in the Soyombo Room 2 of the Best Western Premier Hotel. The event will discuss how healthy wetlands reduce disaster risks, using examples from India, Indonesia and Philippines, and reflect on best practices and implementation. For more information on this event, click here.

Global Fire Monitoring Centre and partners will also be organizing a side event on “Climate change and Disaster Risk Reduction” on July 5, 2018, from 4:30pm to 6:30pm in the Moscow Room of the Shangri-La Hotel. The Asia-Pacific forestry sector is undergoing unprecedented changes as economies grow rapidly and demand on forests for goods and services accelerate. Jamaica gets approval for climate resilience work in Annotto Bay
The Adaptation Fund Board approved the Government of Jamaica’s proposal to focus on climate change adaptation through building coastal resilience in the North-Eastern section of the country. Annotto, Buff and Orange Bays are generally impacted by wave action during hurricanes and tropical storms. This project will benefit communities in these exposed areas. Activities include watershed rehabilitation through reforestation for flood risk reduction and land husbandry improvement in watersheds surrounding the Bays. Read more here.

How do we reduce disaster risk in river deltas?

Coastal river deltas are important hot spots of global change and, being highly populated, are ecologically and economically important hubs. Their dynamic nature puts them at risk of flooding and erosion, which are expected to intensify with climate change. To support the planning of targeted risk reduction and adaptation strategies, including ecosystem-based solutions, the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-IEHS) developed an innovative assessment methodology to analyse risks in deltas to support resilience efforts in these regions.
