Op-Ed Piece
Climate change is a potent element in the deadly brew of disaster risk

©Christophe Ena/AP
In an op-ed article in The Guardian, Helen Clark (Administrator of the UNDP) and Robert Glasser (Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction) make a case for the integration of disaster risk reduction and climate change efforts. They also mention that more effort is needed to address degraded ecosystems in order to comprehensively reduce risk. Keep reading.

Resetting the river template: The potential for climate-related extreme floods to transform river geomorphology and ecology
This article in the journal “Freshwater Biology” provides evidence of the relationship between disaster risk and ecosystems. It discusses how flood risk management strategies, when implemented, can impact the morphology and ecology of rivers. However, flood management techniques that incorporate a river’s natural course could mitigate flood damage. Read the article.

Documentary: Hope in a changing climate
This BBC World documentary by soil scientist John Liu illustrates that degraded ecosystems can be restored (especially through replanting vegetation), and that restoration has benefits for climate change mitigation, reduction of drought/flood risk, as well as meeting other priorities such as reducing poverty. The film features cases from Ethiopia, Rwanda and China. Watch the documentary.

Nepal gears up to build earthquake-resistant structures using bamboo

©Rajendra Shakya
A recent initiative by the Common Fund for Commodities, International Network for Bamboo and Rattan, the Government of Nepal, ICIMOD and ABARI aims to help Nepal build back better after the April 2015 earthquake through the sustainable use of bamboo forests. Sustainable forest use will reduce earthquake vulnerability by using high-tensile strength bamboo as a locally-sourced construction material. A  workshop on this initiative was held 1 March in Kathmandu. Find out more.
