Asian Wetland Symposium 2017 recognises Eco-DRR
|

Increased implementation of Eco-DRR actions is one of the eight goals of the 2017 Asian Wetland Symposium in Saga, Japan. The Saga Statement highlights the need to combine traditional Eco-DRR practices and scientific knowledge, as well as quantify the effectiveness of Eco-DRR through research, and pursue its incorporation into policies, legal frameworks or administrative measures at national and local levels. The Center for Neighbourhood Technology has released a new guidebook: The Value of Green Infrastructure: A Guide to Recognizing Its Economic, Environmental and Social Benefits. It aims to inform decision-makers, planners and communities by placing an economic value on the numerous benefits provided by green infrastructure. View the report here.

Mangroves as protection from storm surges in Bangladesh
|
|
A new Policy Research Working Paper from the World Bank evaluates the protective capacity of mangrove forests against storm surge in seven coastal locations of Bangladesh, where surge heights can range from 1.5 to 9 meters. The findings highlight that mangroves must be used along with built infrastructure such as embankments. Read the paper here.

Journal article: Ecosystem-based adaptation to climate change in Brazil
|
|
A new journal article identifies hotspot municipalities in Brazil for ecosystem-based adaptation policy design and implementation. The article proposes the use of a new indicator using poverty, proportion of natural-vegetation cover, and exposure to climate change parameters to define priority municipalities for preventive policies and strategies. A joint project between the Green Climate Fund and UN Environment is set to build resilience to climate change and improve livelihoods in The Gambia. Large-scale ecosystem-based approaches are seen as necessary to build the climate resilience of rural Gambian communities, whose livelihoods are threatened by the impacts of climate change. USAID and The Nature Conservancy have released a new report outlining the components and results of their project on ecosystem-based adaptation in the Magdalena River Basin, Colombia which took place from September 2013 - March 2017. The project was designed to improve the watershed’s resilience and adaptation capacity to climate variability and climate change. Read the report here.
