Nominations open for the Luc Hoffmann Medal for Wetland Science and Conservation



 
Nominations are open for the Wetlands International Luc Hoffmann Medal for Wetland Science and Conservation. Nominees can be individuals who have shown outstanding leadership and accomplishment in an area of wetland research and conservation, or in sharing their passion for wetlands through raising public awareness. 

Wetlands International are seeking worthy nominees from around the world for the award which will be presented in March 2018. The nomination guidelines, the nomination form and more information can be found here. The deadline for submission is 15 January 2018.

Nature’s architect: How oyster-tecture can protect New York City
In 1942, New York was a world centre for oysters. A recent article by Acclimatise UK looks at efforts to restore part of an oyster reef in New York City to rebuild resilience to coastal flooding and storm surges. The idea has gained increasing attention since Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Read more here.
Bhutan: Protect landscapes to protect everything
Bhutan has launched a ground-breaking US$13.9 million Global Environment Facility project aimed at enhancing the resilience of communities and protecting the country’s rich biodiversity in the face of a changing climate. “Combining biodiversity and ecosystem management work with climate change adaptation actions, Bhutan is again leading the world with an example of truly integrated programming.” Read more here.

Monitoring coastal zone changes from space
The world’s coastal zones are under serious threat from coastal erosion, cyclones, storms, and saltwater incursion into estuaries and coastal aquifers. The resilience of coastal communities depends on an integrated, worldwide coastal monitoring effort. A new opinion piece from Eos looks at how satellite observations provide valuable data on global to local scales. Read the article here.

FAO releases publication to support climate-smart agriculture
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has released a second edition of the Climate-Smart Agricultural Sourcebook. The report notes that maintaining ecosystem services will increase the resilience of agricultural ecosystems to climate change and other stressors. It also includes a detailed discussion on the relationship between climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction in the agricultural context. Read the report here.

Applications open – MPhil in Conservation Leadership at University of Cambridge
The MPhil degree in Conservation Leadership at the University of Cambridge is a full-time, 11-month, masters course, aimed at graduates of leadership potential with at least three to five years of relevant experience.
