Western Indian Ocean Islands take matters into their own hands with Eco-DRR training



 
Due to growing interest in Eco-DRR, the Ministry of Social Security, National Solidarity, and Environment and Sustainable Development of Mauritius, invited IUCN to deliver an Eco-DRR training from 9-13 October 2017, in partnership with the Indian Ocean Commission. The training aimed to strengthen national capacities to mainstream Eco-DRR in national and local development planning.

The workshop convened 40 participants from disaster management, environment, local authorities and other concerned ministries/organisations in Mauritius as well as representatives from Madagascar, Seychelles and Zanzibar. See a video from the workshop here.

A new article in Forbes looks at the benefits of including green infrastructure when strengthening America’s aging infrastructure. It argues that green infrastructure can provide the same services as traditional man-made solutions, but at less cost while also providing environmental benefits. Read the full article here.
India: Encroached wetlands increase climate risks in Chennai
India Climate Dialogue explores the reduced disaster resilience of the Chennai region in India due to shrinking wetlands and forest patches. A reduction in these ecosystems has drastically reduced the city’s ability to soak up excess rainwater. Read the article here.
Fiji encourages Pacific countries to embrace nature-based solutions
At a recent Pacific Regional Dialogue on linking climate change, biodiversity and sustainable development, Fiji's Permanent Secretary for Environment, Mr. Joshua Wycliffe encouraged Pacific countries to embrace nature-based solutions to climate change. "Countries have nothing to lose. It doesn't cost much. It may be as simple as maintaining what we have. And of course, repairing the ecosystems that have been damaged,” he said. As climate threat grows, Solomon Islands hunts “evergreen” solutions
Following a series of substantial flooding events which destroyed crops, homes and livelihoods in the Solomon Islands, the Government is working on new legislation to integrate climate and disaster resilience in development. Read more here.

New manual helps Arab countries to integrate climate change in integrated water resources management
A new manual has been developed as part of the United Nations Development Account Project to enhance climate change adaptation capacities in Arab countries, using integrated water resources management (IWRM) tools. The project provides regionally-appropriate IWRM tools for supporting climate change adaptation in five key sectors: agriculture, economic development, environment, health and human settlements. The report makes reference to the importance of protecting ecosystem services. Access the report here.
