New Policy Brief from Ramsar Convention Secretariat  



 
On the 2017 International Day of Disaster Resilience, the Ramsar Convention Secretariat released a policy brief on Wetlands for disaster risk reduction: Effective choices for resilient communities

The policy brief examines the role of wetlands in building community resilience against water-related hazards such as floods, droughts and storm surges. It provides recommendations for effective integration of wetlands into disaster risk reduction strategies. Read the policy brief here.

How much is a tree worth?
Associate Professor Julie Muller from the Northern Arizona University has been awarded a grant from the U.S. Geological Survey to measure the economic value a forest ecosystem in northern New Mexico provides. “Understanding the monetary value of ecosystem services provided by forests is essential for efficient protection and forest use decisions,” Mueller said. Green infrastructure being considered for Can Tho City, Vietnam
Can Tho City in southern Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region is taking its first steps in urban green infrastructure development. A recent workshop in the city emphasized that green infrastructure has a significant role in promoting sustainable development in the city, especially in the context of adverse climate change and environmental pollution impacts. Have we underestimated the role of nature in climate change mitigation?
A new article published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that nature-based solutions can provide up to 37% of the emissions reductions needed by 2030 to keep global temperature increases under 2°C. This is 30% more than previously estimated. Read the paper here.

Two new webinars on climate adaptation and EbA announced

The SNRD Asia Climate Change Adaptation Working Group and the Ecosystem-based Adaptation Community of Practice have announced two new 1-hour risk assessment webinars. Webinar 1 on ‘risk assessments in the adaptation policy context’ will take place on 24 October 2017, and Webinar 2 on ‘Risk assessments in the EbA context’ will take place 2 November 2017. TERRAenVISION 2018
The next TERRAenVISION Conference will be held in Barcelona from 29 January to 02 February 2018. The conference focuses on scientific research needed to find solutions for societal issues and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and networking.
