Georgia cities move on Sendai Framework

The cities of Tblisi, the capital of Georgia, and Gori, from the eastern part of the country, are moving to strengthen their readiness in applying the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. Both cities are undertaking comprehensive risk assessment as a precursor to forming risk-resilient City Development Plans. The exercise is broad-ranging including analysis of institutions, financing, hazards and risk information, infrastructure protection, land use planning, strengthening ecosystems, effective preparedness and public awareness. Tbilisi and Gori are two of the eight cities in UNISDR’s Resilient Cities project in the Central Asia and South Caucasus Region. Read more
WWF-Pakistan urges better floodplain management to mitigate recurrent flood losses

WWF-Pakistan raised serious concerns over the increased frequency of massive floods and urged the Government of Pakistan to reduce the impacts of flood hazards through better management of critical watersheds and floodplains. The Director General of WWF-Pakistan pointed out that deforestation in watersheds and encroachments on floodplains are the main reasons for the increasing devastation caused by heavy rains and floods. Read more
 
Ghana to sign new UN sustainable development agenda

President John Dramani Mahama has confirmed that Ghana will be signing up to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). According to the President, the country needs to broaden its participation and make good use of technology. The United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) in Ghana (2012-2016) provides support for strengthening the capacity of Ghana to address energy and environmental challenges by focusing on key priorities such as climate change, disaster risk reduction, energy, and biodiversity. Learn more

7th International Conference on Integrated Natural Disaster Management

The NIDM Conference will bring together Iranian and international experts in risk and disaster management in Tehran, Iran, in February 2016. The conference will cover a broad range of topics, including the need for an improved understanding of disaster risk, vulnerability and hazard characteristics, strengthening disaster risk governance, avoidance of new risks, climate change adaptation, GEO-information, and socio-economic vulnerability. Researchers, practitioners, civil society, students and governmental representatives are invited to submit abstracts on their work until 16 January 2016. Learn more
Publication

Arab sustainable development report: technical summary 2015 

This report underlines the increasing trend of disasters over the past decades in the Arab region. However, the report states that Governments are yet to invest in corrective disaster risk management strategies that address the social, economic, institutional, natural and physical factors contributing to disaster vulnerability. The report calls upon the authorities in the region to invest in innovation and technology that support the preservation of ecosystems and their services as a priority for improving sustainable development. Link to the report

EMI’s Institute of Urban Resilience (IUR) offers the Webinar series as an innovative learning experience for professionals. The Webinars provide a structured and comprehensive lecture on most relevant urban resilience and disaster risk management topics with pertinent examples and case studies. This year, the webinar series consists of two sections: Tools in Integrating Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Management (coming this September) and Nature-based Strategies for Coastal Defense (this November). The Center for Excellence in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance is seeking article submissions for the next issue of Liaison Magazine, a journal of civil-military disaster management and humanitarian relief collaborations. The Spring 2016 issue will feature "Lessons from Nepal and Other Recent Disasters". Submissions of ideas are due by November 1, 2015 and the deadline for first drafts is January 15, 2016. Learn more
