 PEDRR Shoutout: Call for Nominations of Young Scientists
APEC Science Prize for Innovation, Research
and Education (ASPIRE) 2015 prioritizes DRR
The theme for this year’s ASPIRE is “Disaster Risk Reduction: Understanding the Role of Climate Change and Variability”. It focuses on innovative technologies that help economies adapt to the changing climate, protect the natural environment, and build resilient and sustainable societies. Each member country, through its representative on the APEC Policy Partnership for Science, Technology and Innovation (PPSTI), is invited to nominate one young scientist under the age of 40 to be considered for the 2015 ASPIRE Prize. The subjects vary from sustainable development, environmental studies, ecology to disaster management, urban planning, and engineering. Learn more

Sendai Framework on DRR cited in the new Sustainable Development Goals
On 2 August, the 193 Member States of the United Nations agreed to an outcome document constituting the new sustainable development agenda. The 17 new sustainable development goals will succeed the eight Millennium Development Goals adopted in 2000. References to the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction are found under Goal 11: “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”. DRR is also referred to in Goals 1, 2, and 13. The outcome document is expected to be formally adopted by the UN General Assembly at the Sustainable Development Summit in New York, from 25 to 27 September 2015. Link to the document
China: Hai River Basin Project gives priority to water security and drought resilience
China has been facing drought in the last ten years, and water scarcity has been worsened by water pollution. A water project in northern China’s Hai River basin supported by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) will improve the water quality and ecosystem and will reduce droughts and water scarcity in the Hai River basin. The project area includes major cities such as Beijing and Tianjin and the Hebei Province that surrounds the two cities. Read more

Madagascar: Reducing vulnerabilities to extreme weathers through protected areas
In Madagascar, the red soil that used to feed this “Great red island” is suffering severe erosion, causing huge losses to its agricultural production. High deforestation is contributing to this problem and has made the island more vulnerable to extreme weathers such as cyclones, floods and droughts. The World Bank and other donors have supported 54 protected areas that play a strategic role in the country’s economy and ability to withstand extreme weathers; however, these areas are under threat because of poverty, poor law enforcement and lack of livelihood alternatives. International Water Conference 2015
To be held on 17-18 November 2015 in Karachi, Pakistan, the International Water Conference will focus on "Securing Sustainable Water for All”. Issues for discussion will include water exploitation and pollution as well as meeting our needs in agriculture, energy, environment, industries and other uses. Water-related disasters, such as drought and flood, will also be featured. Over 1200 people are expected to attend. Learn more
UNISDR Science and Technology Conference on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for DRR
The conference will bring together the science and technology community, policymakers and practitioners to discuss how the science and technology community could best support the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030). A call for abstracts will be open between August and October 2015. Learn more

The 5th International Conference on Earth Observation for Global Changes (EOGC 2015) and the 7th International Conference on Geo-information Technologies for Natural Disaster Management (GiT4NDM2015) will be held in Al-Ain, United Arab Emirates from 8 to 10 December 2015. The conference offers an interdisciplinary forum in the fields of remote sensing, geography, marine science, forestry, renewable energy, environment, disaster management, and climate change science. The deadline for submissions of abstracts is 31 August. Read more
