Calls for post-Hurricane Harvey reconstruction to consider green infrastructure
|
|
In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, the Huffington Post argues for improved zoning laws in Houston and Florida that allow natural habitats to defend people against torrential rains and create strong barriers between residential areas and industrial complexes. The article states that although Hurricane Harvey’s floods were unprecedented, the situation was made worse in Houston due to zoning laws and over development on wetlands that could have absorbed stormwater. Green Infrastructure helped Atlanta to manage rain during Hurricane Irma
|
|
Atlanta, Georgia in the United States is using green infrastructure to help reduce flooding and pollution. Red brick roads, rain gardens and large ponds are being used to prevent water rushing into sewers and overwhelming the systems during big storms. These projects have already demonstrated their potential to manage the substantial downpour during Hurricane Irma. More here.

EbA identified to help Santos adapt to climate impacts
|
|
A new report developed by the São Paulo Research Foundation for the coastal city of Santos, Brazil, identifies mangrove rehabilitation among the suite of activities needed to build resilience to the impacts of climate change. Santos is home to Latin America's biggest harbour and is exposed to sea-level rise, storm surge and coastal flooding. More on the report here.

Equator Prize Awards honour EcoDRR activities
|
|
The 9th Equator Prize Award Ceremony honoured 15 winners in New York last week. The latest group of winners are protecting, restoring and sustainably managing marine, forest, grassland, dryland and wetland ecosystems, while creating jobs and livelihoods, protecting endangered wildlife, and decreasing risks from natural disasters. Stormwater management in Texas could benefit from green infrastructure
|
|
A new report by Environment Texas shows that most Texas cities have too few public policies promoting green infrastructure and low-impact development in both public and private developments. While poor storm water controls are a major contributor to urban flooding and erosion, the proper use of green infrastructure can make a big difference. Read the report here.

A new report from Blue Forest Conservation and the World Resources Institute looks at the role of private investment in forest restoration and conservation to manage wildfire risk, water supplies and other climate vulnerabilities in the United States through the Forest Resilience Bond (FRB). A new article in Nature emphasizes the important contribution of seagrass in facilitating sediment surface elevation and reducing coastal erosion. The new GSMA Disaster Response Innovation Fund can provide funding to test or scale up your idea. Funding of up to £300,000 per project is available, as well as promotion and networking opportunities. Applications are due by 13 October 2017.
