Newsletter on ecosystems-based risk reduction and climate change adaptation
PEDRR Shoutout: Applying science is key to disaster risk reduction

In order to implement the Sendai Framework for DRR, the science and technology communities play an important role in understanding risk and finding DRR solutionsSome of these innovations will include ecosystem-based protection for DRR. The UNISDR Science and Technology Conference, taking place on 27-29 January in Geneva, Switzerland, will serve as a platform to set the agenda for innovation and research over the next 15 years. Find out more from this news article.  PEDRR partners, namely UNU-EHS, UNESCO and UNEP, have been actively engaged in the preparations. UNEP will be presenting at the plenary session, “Leveraging Science through Capacity Development and Research”, on 29 January at 9 AM.  Find the conference  website and programme here.

Ecosystem-based engineering for sustainable delta trajectories
Ecology&Society has published an article arguing that ecosystem-based forms of hydraulic engineering (i.e. engineering to control and manage water resources) can be used for gradual, region-specific re-orientations of unsustainable delta trajectories, which describe the development pathways of a social-ecological-technological delta system. The article is available online on Ecology&Society’s website.

Climate Change and Natural Disasters
This scientific paper looks at the trend of increasing frequency and severity of climate-related disasters as well as rising greenhouse gas emissions to see if these two phenomena are linked. By using a regression within a model of disaster risk determination for 1971 to 2013, the results show that the  disasters and climate change are indeed connected. Because of this connection, the paper argues that climate change adaptation efforts must be part of disaster risk reduction. Read the whole paper.

Outlook for forest landscape restoration in low emissions future

©UNEP
This blog post discusses the 2015 UNEP Emissions Gap Report, which features a chapter on forest-based climate change mitigation. The author describes the publication’s analysis of the technical potential for developing countries to achieve sustainable forest management, in the context of SDG 15 and the Paris Agreement. Read more here.
Six ways Impact Investing is transforming the environmental movement

To encourage conversations about impact investing at the World Economic Forum meetings last week, Mark Tercek, CEO of The Nature Conservancy, lists six ecosystem-based impact investment deals that the The Nature Conservancy made in 2015. Some of these investment include building green infrastructure to absorb urban storm water, and restructuring the debt payments of the Seychelles to protect marine ecosystems from climate change impacts. Read about all 6 of the investments here.
Training Opportunity
Training Course on Integrated Water Resource Management
Water, and the ecosystem services it provides, is often ignored as an integral resource in human development, and its supply has been taken for granted in many countries. This training programme will equip learners with methods of effective integrated water resource management practices, including how to prepare for hazards such as water scarcity. The training will take place 01 – 05 February, at the IRES Training Centre in Nairobi, Kenya. Learn more and register.
