PEDRR Lunch seminar `Advancing the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda through

This PEDRR lunch seminar is being organized to assess how ecosystem-based approaches are supporting implementation of our global commitments to build local and national resilience against disasters and climate change and celebrating 10 years of PEDRR. Wood versus waves:  Effect of willow trees on wave height reduction
Deltares addresses the most urgent knowledge gaps on the role of trees in flood risk reduction by testing trees with extreme waves in a massive flume. This experiment helps to find a new innovative way using nature-based solutions to protect people against flood damage instead of using hard infrastructure. See the video here

Digital tools for resilience

Many digital tools such as drones or artificial intelligence are helping to drive progress across the field of resilience. For example, drones can be used to map degraded land. Geospatial data provides satellite images which assists in analyzing deforestation in specific areas and better tackle disasters before they occur. Read more here


Better forest management won’t end wildfires, but it can reduce the risks 


Wildfires are natural hazards which can develop with little warning and have devastating impacts.  Climate change can exacerbate wildfire hazards, while integrated forest management can help reduce the risks of wildfires. Read the whole article here

Inaugural African Ministerial Summit on Biodiversity adopts Regional Agenda for Accelerated Ecosystem Restoration


The Ministerial Summit on Biodiversity convened in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt at the 14th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity announced new targets towards ecosystem restoration. The Summit highlighted the role of nature-based solutions such as wetlands and sand dunes to tackle biodiversity loss and climate change impacts. Read more here

Research results from the Ecosystems Protecting Infrastructure and Communities project, Burkina Faso: Strengthening evidence and informing policy 

This report presents the framework used in a project implemented in Burkina Faso to assess the effectiveness of ecosystem-based approaches for protecting communities against climate change and disasters. Results can provide guidance on how to document evidence which can be used to develop policy guidance. Read more here
