PEDRR Shoutout : From grey to green: Developing the guidelines for natural infrastructure

California released its Fourth Climate Change Assessment which addresses the protection of the state’s coastline from effects of climate change. Guidelines for the implementation of natural infrastructure elements are presented in the report by The Nature Conservancy, Point Blue and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Sustainable solutions along the shore are being advocated, such as restoration of beaches or replanting of mangrove forests. Read further here

Advancing ecosystems and disaster risk reduction in policy, planning, implementation, and management
Published in the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction, authors from The Nature Conservancy, University of Glasgow, UN Environment and United Nations University highlight the role of ecosystem-based approaches for disaster risk reduction in global agreements such as the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and Sustainable Development Goals. However, authors also demonstrate the lack of standardized, technical guidelines to design and apply ecosystem-based measures for reducing disaster risk. Read the publication here

UNDP partners with Deltares to support nations in building bankable climate change funding proposals

The United Nations Development Programme is working with Deltares as experts on coastal and river management to support vulnerable Pacific Nations to establish ecosystem-based climate change adaptation plans, including through the Green Climate Fund (GCF). The GCF has mobilized US$600 million which was used to support several projects and increase the resilience of 217 million people worldwide. Read more here
Toolkit
UNDP partners with Deltares to support nations in building bankable climate change funding proposals
The toolkit was developed in cooperation by GRID-Arendal for the Marine Ecosystem Services Partnership (MESP) website which aims to provide access to valuation data and information about latest ecosystem services news. Ecosystem service assessment and valuation can be integrated into priority planning and management instruments such as mangrove and seagrass conservation and risk management strategies. It allows decision makers to explore alternative future management options by linking each option to the ecological changes. See here how the toolkit works.

Webinar
Reducing Coastal Risk with Natural Defenses: The Latest Ecology, Engineering, and Economics of Natural Infrastructure

The Marine Ecosystem Services Partnership (MESP) is offering a webinar that was aired in May this year to introduce the functions of coastal defense measures such as salt marshes and reefs. It emphasizes the capacity of those natural features to reduce impacts of storms, protect coastal habitats and shows the cost-effective factor compared to grey infrastructure.
