World Wetlands Day on 2 February is rapidly approaching! For the 2018 edition, the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance invites you to join them in raising awareness around the 2018 theme of:  Welands for a sustainable urban future. Resilient cities contribute to sustainability. All outreach materials are now available to download here.

Fiji villagers plant mangroves in race against rising seas
Fiji is seen as particularly vulnerable to climate change, with some of its 300 low-lying islands susceptible to rising seas. Villagers living on the banks of Laucala Bay in the capital of Suva are carefully planting neat rows of mangrove seedlings to build resilience to climate change and its effects. Read more here.
Abstracts open for 2018 EGU General Assembly session on nature-based solutions
From 8-13 April 2018, the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly will be held in Vienna, Austria. Abstracts are being accepted for a specific session called “Nature Based Solutions for hydrological extremes and water resource management" (session code - HS5.4). The session will explore the use of nature-based solutions to address catchment wide hydrological issues in both rural and urban settings. Abstracts are due 10 January. New case studies show potential of nature-based infrastructure to mitigate sea level rise in the US
Sea level rise and associated flooding will threaten nearly $100 billion worth of property along the California coast by 2100. A feasible alternative to coastal armoring is natural infrastructure, which new case studies have been shown to be a cost-effective approach to mitigating risk of floods, storms and sea level rise in many places. Read the case studies here.

New project launched in Uganda to restore wetlands and build community resilience

The Government of Uganda and the United Nations Development Programme have kick-started a new $44.26 million Green Climate Fund-financed project, which will help restore degraded wetlands, improve ecosystems, and strengthen climate information and early warning systems. Understanding how to build effective, culturally grounded measurement systems is a fundamental step toward supporting adaptive management and resilience in the face of environmental, social, and economic change. A new paper reviews seven case studies and a framework to identify patterns in relation to culturally grounded indicator sets.
