PEDRR Shoutout - Summer School - Risk Sensitive Environmental Management

This course provides key concepts of urban disaster resilience and focuses on the role of ecosystems in disaster resilience cities. Case studies featuring Himalayan ecosystems are discussed. This course has been developed by UNDP and CEPT University based in India. More information.

Publication

"The impact of Natural Hazards and Disasters on Agriculture and Food and Nutrition Security"

Prepared as a briefing paper for the World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction recently held in March 2015 in Sendai, this FAO publication calls for a better integration of disaster risk reduction into the agricultural sector. Data regarding the impact of natural disasters on the agricultural sector is lacking, although the sector absorbs 22% of the total economic impact of disasters. Read full publication.

Brian McAdoo and Lisabeth Paravisini-Gebert explain that pre-existing conditions of poor governance, environmental and land degradation have contributed to increase local vulnerability to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Read full article.

Food security project supports long-term resilience in remote island community in Fiji

A Food Bank project is helping Yasawa Island's communities learn how to be resilient to disasters. This initiative encourages risk-resilient crops and improved farming techniques in order to enhance water and food security. It will be implemented in seven villages, including planting and crops storage as well as fundraising for post-disaster recovery. Read full article.

Keep it fresh or salty: An introductory guide to financing wetlands carbon programs and projects

This joint-report from IUCN, Conservation International and Wetlands International focuses on how to finance restoration and conservation of wetlands. Wetlands can serve as protection against hazards, but its maintenance may be challenged by the lack of funds, especially in developing countries. This guide provides tools to source funds for wetlands' conservation and restoration projects. Read full article.
