Launch of the NbS-4-Resilience Network!

 
 
Are you an expert or scientist in a field related to Nature-based Solutions (NbS)? Are you experienced in researching or working with NbS and ecosystems for disaster risk reduction (Eco-DRR) for resilience building? Come and join the new NbS-4-Resilience Network - Experts for Eco-DRR!

On 13 October which celebrated International Day for Disaster Resilience 2017, PEDRR launched the new expert network. PEDRR seeks to expand our community of practice to NbS experts to ensure our advocacy work is grounded in the latest science and technology. We will work together to help raise awareness and understanding of Eco-DRR across governments, businesses and the community.

New climate funding pays to protect forests
The Green Climate Fund has announced it will dedicate US$ 500 million to help conserve forests and mangroves — a strong recognition of nature’s role in helping to solve climate change. It sends a powerful signal to developing countries that keeping forests standing can come with a financial benefit. More here.
Why smart city infrastructure is going green
A recent article by Smart Cities World looks at trends in the uptake of green infrastructure in urban environments. In addition to outlining the benefits of city forests and incorporating nature into stormwater management, the article also looks at the importance of measuring success and looking at innovative technology to support green infrastructure investments. Green Infrastructure For Cities
In a recent article in the Huffington Post, Ambassador and former Chief Executive of Future Cities Catapult, Peter Madden OBE, argues for increased uptake of green infrastructure in cities. “Green infrastructure is an area where I think city governments should show more leadership and put more investment.” Read the article here.

New paper: Twenty years of ecosystem services
A new review paper published in Ecosystem Services traces the 20 year history of our understanding of ecosystem services. It looks at how far have we come and how far we still need to go. The paper concludes that ecosystem services should be at the core of fundamental economic changes if we are to achieve societal transformation towards a sustainable and desirable future. New report: Preservation of floodplains is flood protection
A new report by the Technical University of Munich on floodplain protection concludes that rivers need more space, diversity, and freedom in order to protect the species and communities that rely on it. Reconnecting floodplains to the natural river system increases the river's ability to absorb storm water, improve water quality and reduce risk of flooding and flood damage. New MOOC on Resilience for Development

Are you interested in learning how to incorporate the concept of resilience into your work? Do you want to promote an integrated approach to social and ecological sustainability? Starting on 31 October 2017, a new Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) called ‘Introduction to Resilience for Development’ can help you. It will be delivered in English, French, and Spanish. New MOOC on Governance of Disaster Risk
A new, free and online MOOC on Governance of Disaster Risk has been launched. It covers the diverse approaches to address disaster risk and the roles played by societal actors in creating and reducing vulnerability to natural and technological hazards.
