PEDRR Shoutout -  Promoting ecosystems for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation

The post-2015 Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction is out. With contributions from PEDRR partners, this Discussion Paper explores how disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation could be integrated through ecosystem-based approaches. Reviewing 37 projects, the paper highlights the differences and similarities between Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR) and Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EBA). Key entry points for integration are highlighted. More information.

Water for a sustainable world

This joint report from UN Water, UNESCO, World Water Assessment Programme and other UN agencies looks at trends and challenges in reducing vulnerability to water-related disasters, and identifies measures, such as improved ecosystems management, for achieving resilience. Read full publication.

Resilience to extreme weather

Released during the Third World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in March, this report by the UK Royal Society considers the latest scientific evidence concerning the impact of extreme weather on people throughout the world. With maps and models it indicates where high densities of vulnerable people are more likely to be exposed to floods, droughts and heatwaves in coming decades and assesses actions that can help prevent disasters, including ecosystem-based and hybrid ecological and engineering approaches. More information.

9th Conference on community-based adaptation to climate change

Organised by the African Centre for Technology Studies, the Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies and the International Institute for Environment and Development, this conference highlights effective adaptation to climate change that takes place at the community level. It will hold a plenary session on evaluating Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EBA) effectiveness, and recognizing the importance of ecosystem services for climate change adaptation. A parallel session is also being organized to discuss how EBA can be put into practice. More information.
