PEDRR Shoutout:  IUCN Publishes Global Brief on Eco-DRR - Transforming Disaster Risk Reduction with Ecosystem Management

                                     

This policy brief highlights the role of ecosystems for disaster risk reduction. Sustainable management, conservation and restoration of ecosystems can help communities prepare for, cope with, and recover from disasters, including slow-onset events such as famines. Read the brief here.
Project Insights
Restoring our lands and forests, securing our future
Nature-based strategies, including ecosystem restoration, provide more than a third of possible solutions for both climate change mitigation and adaptation. Success stories include Ethiopia and Liberia which are collaborating in the restoration efforts of the “great green wall” that will help achieve 40% of the Bonn Challenge, while Pakistan has planted a billion trees across 350,000 hectares, achieving its 2030 goal for the Bonn Challenge. Building the Caribbean’s climate resilience to insure basic survival

Ten Caribbean countries are receiving support from the Global Environment Facility to address water, land and biodiversity resource management as well as climate change. Under the five year project on “Integrating Water, Land and Ecosystems Management in Caribbean Small Island Developing States”, the countries are implementing national projects in specific sites to enhance ecosystem services for climate resilience . International Day for the Protection of Mangroves
26 July 2018 was the International Day for the Conservation of Mangroves. The survival of mangroves is under threat globally. With this International Day, the importance of mangrove ecosystems is recognized for supporting coastal and marine life and livelihoods and as well as protecting coastlines from storms, tsunamis and sea level rise. Grant to pay for trees: Green infrastructure project in Harrison, Pennyslvania (USA)


A green infrastructure project to combat stormwater runoff will be constructed in Harrison over the next year, which will involve planting trees to prevent floods. Read the full story here.
