Green stormwater management projects to control flooding

A new green infrastructure system in the Upper Hill District of Pittsburgh (PA, USA), is now ready to capture more than one million gallons of stormwater annually. The recently completed Centre and Heron Green Stormwater infrastructure project is another part of Pittsburgh’s ongoing effort to control flooding and improve the health of its waterways through better stormwater management. California is preparing for extreme weather: Time to plant trees!

For years, there has been a movement in California to restore floodplains, by moving levees back from rivers and planting trees, shrubs and grasses in the low-lying land between. Floodplain restoration is increasingly seen as a way of coping with climate change. The reclaimed lands will flood more readily, which will help protect cities and towns from the more frequent and larger floods that California is likely to experience with global warming.
