PEDRR Shoutout: Seven South American countries put the spotlight on linking biodiversity and Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction
 

International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) organized a Regional Workshop on "Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction for Sustainable development: The role of biodiversity” in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina from 15 – 17 March 2017. As part of the RELIEF KIT project, 40 representatives of NGOs and Governments from South America discussed how to improve design, implementation and scaling up of Eco-DRR measures in the region. Steady flows: How a community in southern Laos takes disaster prevention into its own hands
In Southern Lao PDR, the Kamkok ethnic group was experiencing increased flash floods and decreased groundwater levels as a result of poor farming practices. In order to rebuild nature’s ability to regulate and supply water, they plan to gradually replant forests 50 km upstream from Kamkok. Check out more details of the project here.

Unpacking Changes in Mangrove Social-Ecological Systems: Lessons from Brazil, Zanzibar and Vietnam
Mangroves play a key role in maintaining coastal resilience. However, mangroves are under threat, including from climate change and more frequent extreme events. How mangroves systems are changing and adapting to these threats has become an emerging research topic. This newly published scientific article analysed the drivers, pressures, states, impacts, and responses of mangroves systems by examining multiple cases from Vietnam, Zanzibar, and Brazil. Mainstreaming Resilience and Disaster Risk Reduction in Education: Call for Abstracts

 
Disaster Preparedness, Mitigation and Management (DPMM) at the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand is organizing an “International Expert Forum on Mainstreaming Resilience and Disaster Risk Reduction in Education” on 1 -2 December 2017. The forum is now calling for abstracts in five thematic areas, including, (1) disaster risk governance, (2) disaster education and risk communication, (3) disaster risk engineering, science and technology, (4) humanities, social science and risk reduction and (5) sustainability, development and disaster risk. Submit your Eco-DRR abstract by 15 July 2017 through email to DRECB-DPMM@ait.asia. More information could be found here.
