The Maryland flooding is a warning
Recent flash flooding caused significant damage in Ellicott City, Maryland. According to this article, while climate change is making severe rain events like this more common, the lack of natural vegetation that could absorb excess runoff is being replaced by concrete and impervious surfaces, increasing communities' susceptibility to flooding. 54 cities with high drought risk: Water system knowledge and good governance are the solution

Getting ready for the Global DRR Platform in 2019
Preparations for the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction 2019 are proceeding! We would like to encourage the promotion of ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction at the upcoming Regional Platforms: Outcomes of the Regional Platforms feed directly into the Agenda of the Global Platform in 2019.  

UNISDR has launched the Call for Organizing Teams to apply for Working Sessions at the GPDRR. PEDRR will be advocating for 2 Working Sessions: Integrated Risk Management, Ecosystems, Water-related Risks and The Role of Grey and Green Infrastructure in Reducing Disaster Risk

4th Biennial Conference of the Southern Africa Society for Disaster Reduction

On 17-19 Oct 2018 Durban (South Africa) will host the fourth Biennial SASDiR Conference. The event will explore practices to reduce disaster risks following an interdisciplinary approach, from eco-system based disaster risk reduction, to socio-ecological resilience and media and communication in DRR.
