PEDRR Shoutout: Where people and their land are safer

This Compendium of Good Practices in Disaster Risk Reduction is the result of a cooperation between the World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies (WOCAT) and the Swiss NGO DRR Platform. It showcases the linkages between Sustainable Land Management and Disaster Risk Reduction for reducing present and future disasters such as droughts, floods or rainstorms, by preserving and restoring land and water resources that support livelihoods. Future 'ocean cities' need green engineering above and below the waterline
Marine habitats are providers of food, building and crafting materials, and services such as coastal protection, nutrient cycling and pollution filtration. Artificial islands can however cause damage to vital seafloor ecosystems. This article suggests proper planning and science integration for building the "blue-green" ocean cities of tomorrow. Nature provides the means for the sustainable management of floods
For countries like Finland, spring and melting of snow usually also mean the beginning of the flooding season. New research from the Aalto University School of Engineering looks at more sustainable methods to manage floods while providing environmental benefits. Read the article here

Ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction in mountains
Eco-DRR practiced in mountainous regions generally entail forest management to enhance protection from avalanches, landslides and other mountain-related hazards. This paper provides an overview on how forests influence disaster risks in mountainous regions and the associated challenges and uncertainties concerning risk analysis. Access the paper here

Mangrove restoration: to plant or not to plant?

Mangrove planting has become hugely popular. The majority of planting efforts are however failing, raising the question how best to undertake mangrove restoration or rehabilitation. It is argued that a more effective approach is to create the right conditions for mangroves to grow back naturally. Mangroves restored in this way generally survive and function better.
