Back by popular demand, the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on ‘Disasters and Ecosystems: Resilience in a Changing Climate’ is being relaunched TODAY!

The MOOC explores the interlinkages between ecosystems, disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation and how these approaches can be operationalized. The course was developed by the TH Köln – University of Applied Sciences in Germany and UN Environment, and is hosted on the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) platform.

A new report in Ecological Engineering identifies five design principles to support engineers to incorporate ecological considerations. The emerging discipline of ecological engineering is a response to the growing need for engineering practices to provide for human welfare and protect the natural environment. Asia-Pacific region: New guidebook on mainstreaming disaster risk reduction for sustainable development
A new guidebook from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific highlights that integration of disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation has particular importance in the Asia-Pacific region. The guidebook recognises the environmental impacts of disasters. The guidebook is available here.

New research on landscape scale wetland management
Wetlands offer a multitude of services of great social, economic and environmental value to people. While changes in land-use, water-use and climate can impact wetland functions and services at the landscape scale, many engineering and management decisions focus on the local scale. New research in Ecological Engineering investigates the large-scale dynamics of landscape systems with multiple wetlands. Read the article here
Green and grey protection needed for flood management
A recent article in Nature on flood protection highlights the need for both green and grey infrastructure, and in some cases hybrid solutions, to build resilience to flooding. The article can be accessed here.

Call for nominations - Ramsar Wetland Conservation Awards 2018


The Ramsar Convention Secretariat has announced the call for nominations for the seventh edition of the Ramsar Wetland Conservation Awards. The Awards will be presented at the Ramsar Convention COP13 in Dubai in October 2018. Three Awards will be granted, and each recipient will receive the Evian Special Prize of US$10,000. Nominations are due by 30 September 2017. Further information on the Award categories and nomination guidelines can be found here.
Save the date - Understanding Risk Forum, May 14-18 2018, Mexico
The 5th global Understanding Risk Forum will take place from 14-18 May 2018 in Mexico City.  The Forum will highlight best practices, facilitate non-traditional partnerships and showcase the latest technical know-how in disaster risk identification. Submissions for leading a technical session or hosting a side event are due 1 October 2018. Further information is available here
Call for contributions - Resilient Cities 2018
Resilient Cities 2018, the 9th Global Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation, is taking place on 26-28 April 2018 in Bonn, Germany. The call for contributions for the 2018 congress is now open and welcomes proposals for various formats, including presentations, panels, workshops, and debates. Contributions are due by 1 November 2017. Further information can be found here.
