PEDRR Shoutout : Nature-based solutions; do we know how to do it?

Implementation of nature-based interventions is on the rise, but a distinct set of considerations is needed for them to succeed. More than 70 experts from 25 organizations, including The World Bank Group, the Global Facility for Disaster Risk Reduction (GFDRR), United Nations Development Program, Deltares and Ecoshape have drafted guidance intended to enable practitioners succeed in designing and implementing nature-based solutions. San Francisco Bay wetlands restoration takes off
The restoration of San Francisco Bay for people and wildlife is underway. Restored marshes will help filter water pollution and provide habitat for wildlife, but most of all, make the region more resilient to climate change by protecting shoreline communities from extreme storm events and rising sea levels. The hanging gardens of Colombia
Traditional agricultural practices can be disrupted by hazards such as regular floods, longer dry seasons and rising temperatures. Colombia’s Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development is working with UNDP to reduce risk and vulnerability to climate change in the region of La Depresión Momposina, through use of recycled materials, suspended gardens and climate-smart agriculture. Urban wetlands management in Colombo: a new model for urban resilience

This document provides an overview of efforts taken to build flood resilience in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and makes the case for urban wetlands management as viable approach for flood protection and other benefits. It provides key lessons, including the need to clearly identify and measure the additional non-flood related benefits of wetlands management, such as heat reduction and waste water treatment. Coral reefs for coastal protection: A new methodological approach and engineering case study in Grenada
Coastal communities in tropical environments are at increasing risk from both environmental degradation and climate change and require urgent local adaptation action. Evidences show coral reefs play a critical role in wave attenuation. Presenting the case study of Grenville Bay, Grenada, this paper illustrates a systematic approach to assess the protective role of coral reefs and to examine solutions based on the reef's influence on wave propagation patterns.
