Launch of new journal on disaster risk reduction
                     
The Keio University together with Elsevier is launching a new journal named Progress in Disaster Science. The journal aims to provide a scientific review of the progress in the four Priority Actions under the Sendai Framework. The inaugural volume of the journal would be released during the Global Platform in Geneva in the week of 13-17 May, 2019. Send your paper proposal related to Eco-DRR now!

5 ways investors can address the climate challenge
The fight against climate change is linked with large amounts of investments, which will be mainly carried by the finance sector. The Nature Conservation proposes five ways for institutional investors to increase resilience against climate change, including increasing investments in nature and ecosystem-based solutions. New centre to oversee landscape management

A new Land and Water Management Centre has been established by the Czech University of Life Science in Prague. The aim is to search for measures that would enable the country to adapt its landscape with ongoing climate changes. Read the whole article here
City announces Green Infrastructure Plan

Stormwater and heavy rainfall events are affecting the City of Milwaukee in Wisconsin, USA. To address climate change impacts, the city has implemented a new green infrastructure plan, with new investments geared to support the installation of green infrastructure. Read more here.

Combatting Canada’s rising flood costs: Natural infrastructure is an under-utilized option

          


A new publication from the Insurance Bureau of Canada and the University of Waterloo emphasize the need fpr natural infrastructure as an alternative to grey infrastructure options to mitigate floods in Canada. The report demonstrates how to quantify the benefits and costs of these natural features. Read the full document here.
Effective adaptation to rising flood risk
Written by Nature Publishing Group (NPG), this paper provides an overview of challenges to achieve flood mitigation. It describes types of adaptation to climate change, including physical flood protection measures, nature-based solutions and `gray` infrastructure. Nature as a measure to manage flooding is gaining increased attention from Governments due to cost efficient results. Read the full article here.


Training
Blue Training Courses on Ecosystem-based Adaptation



The Blue Solutions Initiative is offering four modular training courses on the topic of “Ecosystems-based Adaptation”. The modules are focusing on climate change adaptation, ecosystem services, conservation finance and marine spatial planning. The courses have been developed for practitioners, technical staff and decision makers responsible for coastal and marine planning and management. Training materials are available online here
Project Insights
Restoration of mangrove ecosystems in Ciénaga de la Virgen (Cartagena, Colombia)
The EbA program in Colombia is supporting restoration of mangroves in vulnerable areas in the coastal lake of Ciénaga de la Virgen. The coastal area is exposed to heavy rain events, floods and drought periods. Through implementation of ecosystem-based adaptation measures, local communities become increasingly interested in EbA approaches. For more information see here.
