Research shows coastal wetlands dramatically reduce property losses during hurricanes
|
|
A new study from the University of California Santa Cruz has shown that coastal wetlands annually reduced property losses by 16% and prevented more than $625 million in damages during Hurricane Sandy. The study showed a clear correlation between wetland cover and avoided property damages: the greater the extent of the wetland, the more protection it provides. Read more here.

US federal grant to fund green infrastructure project on Lake Superior, Michigan
|
|
The US Environment Protection Authority has awarded a US$288,500 grant to the Superior Watershed Partnership, to undertake green infrastructure works at a wetland in Lake Superior near Marquette, Michigan. The project will relocate a stormwater drain from the beach into the wetland to reduce runoff into the lake. The project is expected to improve water quality in the lake and help Marquette deal with intense storms and changing water levels as the climate gets warmer. More information here.

Nature-based solutions in urban areas – new framework for understanding the co-benefits
|
|
Applying nature-based solutions to urban environments offers many benefits in addition to improved environmental outcomes, climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction. Additional co-benefits include improvements to health and quality of life and creation of green jobs. Few frameworks exist for assessing the value of such co-benefits. A recent publication in Environmental Science and Policy proposes a new holistic framework and seven-stage assessment process for better understanding and implementing the co-benefits and costs of nature-based solutions. A new publication by the Associated Programme on Flood Management, the Global Water Partnership and the World Meteorological Organization presents four case studies from the USA, Austria, Japan and Netherlands, highlighting linkages between ecosystem services and flood management. GCF funding to support coastal adaptation in Tuvalu
|
|
|
Through the Green Climate Fund, Tuvalu will receive US$38.9 million to reduce coastal vulnerability and build long-term capability to fight climate change. Under the Tuvalu Coastal Adaptation Project, the Government of Tuvalu will combine the use of hard infrastructure and ecosystem-based initiatives to reduce the impacts of climate-induced sea level rise and intensifying storm events on key infrastructure.
