Newsletter on ecosystems-based risk reduction and climate change adaptation
PEDRR Shoutout: Peduzzi opinion piece in Nature

With climate change, urban development and economic growth, more assets and infrastructures will be exposed to flooding. New research shows that while investments in flood protection are globally beneficial, they have varied levels of benefits locally. In this paper, Pascal Peduzzi, Head of the Global Change and Vulnerability Unit at UN Environment/GRID-Geneva, highlights the potential of hybrid grey and green/ecosystem-based solutions to reduce flood risk at the least possible cost. India to implement Eco-DRR along major rivers
Riparian forest restoration is gaining recognition in India as a cost-effective way to reduce flood and drought risk, among other benefits. Spiritual Guru Sadhguru will embark on a rally along 30 rivers, from September 3 to October 2, to win people’s and government’s support for riverbank restoration. A restoration plan will be submitted to a committee of environmental scientists and lawmakers. Read further here.

New framework for flood protection cost-benefit analysis
Whilst several models have been developed to assess global-scale river-flood risk, methods for evaluating flood risk management investments globally are lacking. This publication presents a framework for assessing costs and benefits of structural flood protection measures in urban areas around the world. Recognizing the costs of structural flood protection measures on ecosystems, the report discusses alternative risk reduction measures. Learn more here.

Nature-based solutions to enhance ecosystem services
Through case studies ranging from land restoration in Iceland to sediment trapping in Ethiopia and wetland construction in Sweden, this publication shows the potential of nature-based solutions as effective measures against water-related disasters and land degradation. Read further here.
Nature-based solutions to enhance ecosystem services

A recent paper documents the gradual expansion method for mangrove restoration to reduce coastal erosion in Vietnam. A two-step process of closing mangrove gaps and expanding mangrove belts seawards could be applied in other parts of Vietnam and South East Asia. Learn more here.
