Of the three drivers of wildfires – vegetation, weather and topography, only the first driver can be managed, says Mark Finney, research forester for the U.S Forest Service’s Rocky Mountain Research Station. Ironically, the key to living with fire risk may be to have more fires, not less. So-called prescribed burnings, a nature-based solution to wildfires, eliminate forest fire fuel such as pine needles. Philippines launch Eco-Disaster Risk Reduction Project

The Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA) and the city of Tacloban are launching the Tacloban Disaster Risk Reduction Master Plan. The programme, funded by the Government of the Netherlands, will involve reforestation of shoreline ponds and mangroves to mitigate storm surges and will serve as a pilot project for implementation in other vulnerable parts of the Philippines. Insurance industry favours nature-based solutions

Data by CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) reveal that one in five companies rely on insurance as part of their climate change risk management strategy. Insurers are increasingly turning to ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction. Swiss and Japanese insurers have prevented natural catastrophe losses through reforestation and mangrove restoration. Further research in ecosystem services valuation is key for the greater uptake of nature-based solutions by the insurance industry. Learn more here.

First exhaustive global flood and drought analysis
|
|
Civil and environmental engineers at the University of New South Wales conducted the world’s first exhaustive analysis of floods and drought – using data from over 43,000 rainfall stations and 5,300 river monitoring sites across the world. Their results show a positive feedback loop between droughts and floods, as rising global temperatures dry soils, reduce their capacity to absorb water and lead to more urban floods. Read more.
