 PEDRR Shoutout : Reducing flood risk in Panama City
The Juan Díaz sub-district of Panama City has become the most flood-prone area of Panama due to urban developments and landfills in the floodplains, riverbeds and mangroves. Experts of the Dutch water sector, supported by Wetlands International, analysed the problem and advised to start ‘Water Dialogues’. The latter facilitated a participatory learning process to identify the main causes of risk, stimulating innovative solutions such as ‘Building with Nature’ and initiatives on water governance. New tool helps assess agroecosystem vulnerability to climate change
|
|
Climate change and climate-related disasters have a profound impact on agricultural ecosystems and are major drivers of global food insecurity. A new analytical tool developed by World Food Programme, the Consolidated Livelihood Exercise for Analyzing Resilience (CLEAR), brings a better understanding of the food security and climate risks nexus, which is key for the design and targeting of development programmes. The approach works for both gradual long-term agroecosystem changes, including saltwater intrusions, and extreme weather events such as droughts or floods. Learn more here.

Mainstreaming green infrastructure for climate-related risk reduction

The Surface Water Quality Conference and Expo to be held on 29-31 August 2017 in Bellevue, Washington, will focus on integrating Green Infrastructure into mainstream urban planning approaches, recognizing its potential for localized flood mitigation and surface water pollution control. Green vegetation roofs, rain gardens, bioswales, floating treatment wetlands, low-impact development, permeable pavements, and other green infrastructures will be presented during the conference to help municipalities tackle climate-related risks. The authors resorted to the example of wetland restoration: while grey infrastructure projects could yield similar floodwater management results, green infrastructure comes with co-benefits, doubling up as a space for leisure activities and pollution a sink.
