Integrated ecosystem management against wildfires in the Mediterranean
Raging wildfires are once again threatening livelihoods and economies in Southern France and Italy. Farmland abandonment and construction of countryside villas have increased the risk of wildfires in the Mediterranean basin. Ecosystem-based strategies, such as sustainable forestry or grazing and controlled burning, coupled with prevention campaigns, can limit the adverse effects of wildfires. Read the full story here.
Dam construction project jeopardises Upper Niger River delta ecosystems
The Government of Guinea has given a green light for the construction by a Chinese company of the Fomi dam on the Upper Niger River, while the project was still undertaking an environmental and social impact assessment. The project entails high risks for the livelihoods of two million people in the wider western Sahel, who depend on floating rice cultivation and fishing. Those activities are contingent on sufficient water flowing to the floodplain wetlands of the Inner Niger Delta. The dam project is likely to cause droughts in the delta region. Learn more here.

To plant or not to plant: Promoting best practices in mangrove restoration for risk reduction
Despite the increase in mangrove plantation efforts worldwide, many projects do not take off or fail to yield the expected ecosystem services. As the popularity of mangrove restoration as an ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction measure grows, Wetlands International, the IUCN Mangrove Specialist Group and partners, highlights best practices in mangrove restoration and discusses the potential for risk reduction. Green infrastructure: First green roof market assessment
Launched last week by the London Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy Shirley Rodrigues, the first UK Green Roof Market assessment found the market expanding at a rate of 17% each year. This growth is steered by supportive planning policies, with Mayor Sadiq Khan’s ambition of making the city 50% green. Green infrastructure such as living roofs helps mitigate flood risks and heatwaves in cities. Read the full story here and download the report.

Measuring the environmental impacts of green roofs
Despite the environmental and social benefits often associated with green infrastructure, knowledge regarding their effectiveness is limited. Researchers at the University of Illinois are working to fill the knowledge gap. By applying a technique traditionally used in earthquake engineering to determine how well green roofs work, researchers aim to assess the financial risk and environmental benefits. Their findings will support decisions-making by urban planners, policymakers and developers. Learn more here and download the article.

International Conference on Resilient Hindu Kush Himalaya: Developing Solutions towards a Sustainable Future for Asia

To be held on 3-6 December 2017 in Kathmandu, Nepal, this conference will bring together over 200 experts to discuss building disaster resilience in the Hindu Kush Himalaya, a region whose ecosystems provide freshwater to one-fifth of the world’s population but are increasingly vulnerable to disasters. Organised by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), the Government of Nepal and the European Union, the event showcases innovative risk management solutions and a photo competition.
