Limiting the impacts of climate change through green infrastructure

'Green infrastructure' can deliver a more effective and cheaper solution to tackle climate change

According to new research by the European Environment Agency (EEA), an effective way of coping with climate-related disasters is through building and managing “green infrastructure” coupled with a well-planned network of natural areas. The EEA examines how nature can be employed to help Europe in preparing for and decrease the costs associated with climate risks. The study highlights identifying areas of well-functioning ecosystems that can support disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation and reduce the impacts of floods and landslides. In the past 30 years the Great Barrier Reef has lost half its coral cover and faces its largest threat from climate change. Warm, acidic waters impact on corals as well as other fish species that depend on them. Other major threats to the reef include cyclones, invasive species, fishing and pollution. The inshore areas throughout the 2,300 km-long ecosystem are found to  be in poor condition. According to the Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt, improved land management is necessary to reduce coastal pollution and thus measure improvements in marine conditions. Learn more
