UN Environment, Technical University of Cologne (TH Köln) and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), will be relaunching the Massive Open Online Course entitled “Disasters and ecosystems: Resilience in a changing climate” on 18 September 2017, 3PM UTC +1. The course has no fees and is open to all those interested in ecosystem-based solutions for reducing disaster and climate risks. It will have updated video clips and interviews from global leaders, experts and practitioners. Stay tuned for the Registration link!

Houston: Mimicking rural hydrology to avoid floods
Catastrophic floods have been anticipated for some time in Houston, Texas, resulting from the combined effects of climate change and aggressive land development. Which other US cities are exposed to major flooding?
In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, the spotlight has turned to which other cities in the United States could be prone to severe flooding and their strategies to deal with the risks. While in some cities there remains a heavy focus on adopting hard engineering solutions such as sea walls to protect critical infrastructure, some cities, such as New Orleans, are incorporating nature-based solutions in their flood management plans. Natural restoration can help us withstand the next Hurricane Harvey
In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the city of Hoboken, New Jersey, decided to restore marshlands, protect riverbanks and plant trees to reduce flood risks. Urban land developers offset the additional stormwater generated by their activities by funding natural restoration initiatives. Artificial reefs against coastal erosion in India
 
The use of artificial reefs has been successful in increasing biodiversity and making the Vanaar island ecosystems resilient to climate change in the Gulf of Mannar, India. This attempt to recreate natural ecosystems has been so successful in limiting coastal erosion and boosting fish stocks that a National Fund will be set up to launch similar initiatives.
