UK flooding: How a Yorkshire town worked with nature to stay dry

In Pickering, Yorkshire, United Kingdom, citizens pulled together to combat flooding in their area over the holiday season by employing nature-sourced materials. These included bales of heather and dams made of logs and twigs, which allowed normal levels of water to flow through but restricted water when levels rose. The success of these efforts have led to a rethinking of the proposed £5 billion policy which focuses on conventional flood defenses. Read the story here. |

In Guinayangan, The Philippines, The International Institute of Rural Reconstruction is working with the local government and community to restore mangroves as a climate change adaptation strategy, which include identifying appropriate species and ideal locations for planting. The mangroves protect coastal villages from frequent storm surges caused by typhoons as well as provide for local livelihoods. Find out more. |

Insurance firm turns to planting trees in South Africa to combat drought risk

In the Baviaanskloof area of South Africa, the organization Living Lands has been working to restore degraded forests in order to retain more water during periods of low rainfall. The project is being funded in part by the agriculture insurance company Santam, demonstrating increasing interest from the insurance sector to invest more in Eco-DRR.. Learn more. |

In Connecticut, USA, public awareness of the increasing risk posed by climate change has not yet been met with information or tools to reduce that risk. To fill this knowledge gap, the Connecticut Coastal Resilience Program provides a decision support platform to better inform the implementation of nature-based solutions such as restoration of wetlands and beaches. In spite of their importance in providing ecosystem services which reduce disaster risk and help coastal communities adapt to climate change, mangroves in Southeast Asia have experienced significant deforestation. This study seeks to quantify the drivers of deforestation in Myanmar and Indonesia in order to improve implementation of policies that aim to conserve mangroves. Read the article here.
