Newsletter on ecosystems-based risk reduction and climate change adaptation
News from COP21 Briefing paper shared at the “Save Heat for Less Peat” event
Peatland degradation is currently an under-recognized factor in emission reduction initiatives. Yet, degradation of peatlands contribute to at least 5% of global anthropogenic emissions. Wetlands International presents a roadmap for action which includes developing an online Global Peatland Hotspot Atlas, and implementation of wetland conservation and restoration projects.Read more.
Ecosystem-based adaptation events at COP21
UNEP and IUCN are organizing several ecosystem based adaptation events at COP 21 on from 05-08 December at the IUCN pavilion (Blue zone, Hall 3). The full list of events, dates and times can be found here.
Push for increased support for communities as part of agreements
The Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) called on all Parties to prioritize vulnerable and at-risk communities and to make bold investments in mitigation and adaptation, including in disaster risk reduction. The President of the French Red Cross stated that mitigation of the climate crisis will require both cleaner energy as well as preserving ecosystems that prevent disasters. For more details.
Scientific Corner Biodiversity and Resilience of Ecosystem Functions
By identifying ecosystem functions and mechanisms at the species, community, and landscape level, a study shows that biodiversity may be critical for the longer-term resilience of ecosystem functions and related services. This observation is significant as accelerated climate change threatens these mechanisms, which have implications for disrupting ecosystem services that help reduce risk and adapt to climate change. NEW! The PEDRR Virtual Library
The PEDRR Virtual library compiles all types of references on Eco-DRR, drawing from materials featured in PEDRR’s Weekly Eco-DRR Newsletter, as well as from other sources. The references consist of reports, scientific journals, news articles, books and videos. This Virtual Library is YOURS – please use and share widely. If you would like to add references to the Virtual Library, please write to: pedrr.secretariat@gmail.com
