WMO: 2015 likely to be warmest on record, 2011-2015 warmest five year period
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) issued its provisional statement on the status of the climate in 2015, and a five-year analysis for 2011-2015, to inform negotiations at the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Paris. According to WMO, the period 2011 – 2015 have been the warmest on record. Moreover, global average surface temperature in 2015 is most likely to be the warmest on record and may break through 1°C temperature increase above the pre-industrial era. Major factors are due to a combination of a strong El Niño and human-induced global warming. Read more.

The Human Cost of Weather Related Disasters
|
|
A new report reveals that over the last 20 years, 90% of major disasters have been caused by floods, storms, heatwaves, droughts and other weather-related events. In launching the report, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction points out that climate change and variability are major drivers of disaster risk globally. UNICEF’s report shows the impact of climate change on children, their current and future exposure to risks; and the policies required to protect children from risks. The report examines how children may be affected under various climate scenarios and outlines policy recommendations to increase children's resilience to climate change and environmental risks.
