Business, ecosystems and disaster risk reduction
In a roundtable discussion organized by UNESCAP’s Business Advisory Council on private sector engagement in DRR, IUCN’s Asia Regional Office highlighted the critical role of healthy, well-managed ecosystems, such as mangroves and coral reefs, in reducing disaster risk. The cost-effectiveness of nature based solutions was also emphasized. Including representatives from leading businesses, the lively discussion covered business engagement in supporting disaster relief, in preventing and reducing disaster impacts, and enhancing Business Continuity Planning (BCP). Read more

Publications
Study indicates some extreme weather made worse by climate change
A snowstorm in the Himalayas, heat wave in Argentina and heavy downpour in southern France last year, are examples of extreme events being linked to climate change. In an effort to showcase the role of climate change on extreme weather, 28 different storms, droughts, fires and floods were analyzed. The study revealed that not all major events are influenced by global warming, but are linked to human activities, such as unsustainable land and water use. For more.

Awareness and Preparedness for Emergencies at Local Level (APELL)
In this 2nd edition, basic concepts for implementing the APELL process are presented in five steps: engaging stakeholders; understanding hazard and risks; preparedness planning; implementing, disseminating and planning; and maintaining APELL. Link to publication
Case Studies
Re-framing island nations as champions of resilience in the face of climate change and disaster risk
Published as part of the United Nations University Institute of Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) Working Paper series, this study features case studies from islands around the world. The paper discusses ecosystems and livelihoods of island populations, and opportunities for restoring and enhancing resilience through traditional and local knowledge. Read more

EUROGEO is inviting participants working in all areas of geographical research and development to submit abstracts for the EUROGEO 2016 Conference, scheduled to take place from 29 – 30 September 2016 in Malaga, Spain.
