PEDRR Shoutout: F2F Swiss NGO DRR Platform
 
On 11 November 2015, the Swiss NGO DRR Platform is organizing a Face-to-Face (F2F) event in Thun, Switzerland, coordinated by Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation. The event will focus on "Disasters and Water - Integrated Floods Management". A panel discussion will feature experts from the World Meteorological Organisation, Swiss Development Cooperation, the private sector, and the National Platform for Natural Hazards (PLANAT). Reporting from UNCCD COP12
The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCDD) hosted its 12th Session of the Conference of the Parties (CoP12) in Ankara, Turkey, from 12-23 October 2015. At CoP12, the Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity delivered key messages generated from the CBD Technical Workshop on Ecosystem-based Approaches to Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction, held on 28 September - 02 October 2015 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Key messages highlighted the multiple benefits of ecosystems, including for disaster risk reduction, climate change mitigation and adaptation, poverty reduction and achieving "zero land degradation" targets. China's Great Green Wall to stop desertification
The Gobi Desert, the fifth largest desert in the world, is rapidly desertifying parts of China. In an effort to control the expanding Gobi Desert, the Government of China initiated the Three-North Shelterbelt Project also known as the Great Green Wall in 1978. The goal was to plant 100 billion trees covering a 4,500 kilometer area along the northern part of China’s desert. To date, over 66 billion trees have been planted and studies show that measures have improved vegetation and decreased dust storms significantly in the Great Green Wall region. Saving money by investing in natural infrastructure for water
By 2030, an estimated spending of US$10 trillion is projected for repairs and expansion of water infrastructure. However, by investing in natural infrastructure, cities can reduce water management costs as well as improve resilience to climate change. Economic benefits resulting from natural infrastructure are estimated at around $29 trillion per year globally. Read more on how four cities are investing in natural infrastructure.

Published by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the report emphasizes disaster risk reduction as a foundation for sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region. It further highlights the importance of ecosystem-based approaches to disaster prevention and the need for integrating disaster risk reduction into sustainable development plans, policies and sectoral programmes. Biodiversity increases the resistance of ecosystem productivity to climate extremes
In a combined data from 46 experiments that studied grassland plant diversity and productivity across Europe and North America, the study reveals that biodiversity stabilizes ecosystem productivity and productivity-dependent ecosystem services. However, changes resulting from anthropogenic activities may lead to biodiversity loss that decreases ecosystem stability. Restoration of biodiversity may eventually increase ecosystem resistance to climate extremes. Link to publication.
