 PEDRR Shoutout: Partners for Resilience scales up Eco-smart, climate and disaster resilient development
On 5-8 October, the Partners for Resilience (PfR) Alliance gathered 140 practitioners in The Hague to take stock of their collective efforts. Over the past five years, CARE Nederland, Cordaid, the Netherlands Red Cross, Climate Centre and Wetlands International put communities at the center of reducing disaster risks and integrating climate change adaptation and ecosystem management solutions. Together, they delivered services to over half a million people. In the next phase, PfR will scale up its field demonstration projects with a focus on capacity building for influencing policies and plans, investment mechanisms and practices in five disaster-prone regions, including the Horn of Africa. Widespread coral bleaching event intensifying as temperature increases
|
|
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warns of a 3rd global bleaching event where soaring ocean temperatures combined with El Niño will threat coral reefs around the world. If the event prolongs for more than a year as projected, corals will die, resulting in reduced shoreline protection during storms and affecting marine habitats. NOAA stresses the importance of addressing locally-produced threats to coral reefs as a way of building resilience. Continue reading.

Self-regulating corals protect their skeletons against ocean acidification
|
|
Ocean acidification affects coral’s ability to form skeletons and build reef structures. However, scientists from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies (Coral CoE) have identified a coral species that is able to protect itself from ocean acidification. Found in Heron Island lagoon on the Great Barrier Reef, the coral colonies of P.cylindrica have the ability to maintain nearly constant pH levels within their calcifying fluid, regardless of the pH of the surrounding environment. Ecosystem-service assessment: Research needs for coastal green infrastructure

The US White House office recently issued a memorandum calling for the integration of natural infrastructure and ecosystems services into planning and decision-making across all federal agencies. In conjunction with the memorandum, the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) released a report on “Ecosystem-Service Assessment: Research Needs for Coastal Green Infrastructure”, which proposes areas for prioritized Federal research to support application of coastal green infrastructure into risk reduction, planning, investment, regulatory settings and decision-making. The Higher Education for Sustainable Development (HESD) portal developed by the International Association of Universities (IAU) provides access to education material, including Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) that are free online resources, on a wide range of topics related to sustainable development.
