More than 100 organizations in Argentina ask Parliament to approve Wetland Law

More than 100 civil society organizations from Argentina addressed the Parliament to seek approval of the Minimum Standards Law for Wetlands Conservation. The sense of urgency is coming after the latest flooding incidence in Buenos Aires that affected 30,000 people. A large number of wetlands in Buenos Aires are being transformed into real estate, or degraded or altered due to agriculture, embankments, dikes and large-scale livestock farming. New UN report identifies nearly USD 1 billion of annual benefits through ecosystems services in four pilot countries

A UNEP report highlights the findings of the ProEcoServ project in four pilot countries - South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, Vietnam and Chile - where ecosystems services such as water, soil retention, shoreline protection, carbon sequestration and pollination were assessed to inform government policies. The report revealed that ecosystems provided services worth nearly USD 1 billion dollars annually. For instance, in Trinidad and Tobago, coral reefs provided yearly up to USD 50 million of shoreline protection services to the national economy. Learn more.

Our coastal protection, restoration efforts are making a difference
Chip Kline, Executive Assistant to the Governor of Louisiana, U.S.A, for coastal activities and Chairman of the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority Board (CPRA) of Louisiana provides insights on the coastal program adopted after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. A USD 50 billion Master Plan has been developed, with priority given to restoring natural ecosystem buffers which includes marsh creation, shoreline protection and barrier island restoration. According to Kline, after 10 years and billions of dollars spent on protection and restoration projects, the coastal program is gaining momentum and affirms that Louisiana’s coast is better protected. UFS-DiMTEC held its 1st Disaster and Environment Workshop
The University of the Free State - Disaster Management Training and Education Centre for Africa (UFS-DiMTEC) organized a one day workshop on Disaster and Environment in July at Villa Bali Hotel in Bloemfontein, South Africa. The theme of the workshop was “Working with nature to build resilient communities”. Participants attended from both the disaster and environmental management communities.
