Ramsar Convention CoP12 concludes
Over 800 delegates from 160 countries met in Uruguay from 1 - 9 June to review the progress of the Convention and agreed on four strategic priorities that will stem wetland loss and degradation, now estimated at 75% worldwide since 1900. Wetlands for disaster risk reduction is prominently featured in the 2016-2021 Strategic Plan, under Goal 3. The Draft Resolution on Wetlands and DRR submitted by the Government of the Philippines, which calls for the integration of ecosystem-based DRR approaches in wetlands management, was also approved at the CoP. In addition, PEDRR partners organized a side event on wetlands and DRR, which showcased case examples of the sustainable use of wetlands for DRR and building resilience to climate change. Funding Boost for Caribbean DRR
Funding worth US$10 million from the European Commission will support 14 disaster risk reduction projects in the Caribbean until the end of 2016. This initiative is part of efforts to translate the Sendai Framework on DRR in the region. Four hundred thousand people are set to benefit, in a region frequently affected by floods and hurricanes, as well as by landslides and earthquakes. The goal is to reduce the impact of natural hazards by preparing vulnerable populations to reduce disaster risk themselves, thereby bolstering their ability to recover. Projects include simple and inexpensive measures for communities, such as risk mapping, emergency plans, early warning systems, education campaigns and small infrastructure projects. Read more. |

'DamNation' Celebrates Nature's Resilience
Dams are now considered harmful relics that damage river ecosystems and contribute to global warming. Studies have shown that dams "are some of the biggest emitters of methane, which is over 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide, trapping heat in the atmosphere." This documentary depicts how Dam Demolition restores local ecosystems. Realising that storing water out in the sun is a terrible idea, they have begun working with The Nature Conservancy and the state of Texas, to store water in underground aquifers. Read more. |

Taking place under the theme, 'Re-imagining Africa's Food Security Now and into the Future under a Changing Climate,' this conference will convene a number of roundtables and plenary sessions to discuss how ecosystem-based adaptation (EBA) can be used to improve food security across the continent, how resilience to climate change shocks can be enhanced, and how sustainable land use and land management can be promoted. Bibliography on Ecosystem Approaches for Free Public Online Access
Prepared as part of the Environmental Science Doctoral programme of the Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies (IESS), this annotated bibliography is designed to give students and researchers a comprehensive overview of publications on ecosystem management approaches. The 260 page bibliography spans the period between 2000 and 2014, and covers over 700 research articles, papers, books and reports that discuss topics ranging from general ecosystem theory, implementation of the approach in various ecosystems and its application in real world studies. The bibliography is complementary to a book being prepared by IESS for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on guidance for development of graduate-level courses on ecosystem-based adaptation.
